At the 17th Stradbroke Chamber Music Festival, world-class musicians play chamber music masterpieces at an intimate venue in the magnificent natural setting of Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island).
Returning this year are violinist Hed Yaron Meyerson, currently associate concertmaster of the Rotterdam Philharmonic, acclaimed Perth violist Sally Boud, pianists Liam Viney and Anna Grinberg, and the festival's inspirational core musicians. For the Saturday-evening concert, much-loved jazz trio Trichotomy will be presenting a brand-new collaboration with the wonderful African kora player Ziggi Mabeye Diagne.
Throughout the program there are threads of connection – between pieces, composers and places. Schubert's presence is very much felt, especially in Brahms's epic second piano quartet, while earlier in the festival weekend you will hear how he also inspired Dvořák and Coleridge-Taylor. Other highlights include Pavel Haas's electrifying string quartet 'From the Monkey Mountains' (with drum kit) and Tim Munro performing Lachlan Skipworth's 'Cavern' for alto flute and string quartet.
The usual six concerts will again all be held at the Point Lookout Community Hall rather than at different venues on the island.
Enjoy these three days of music amid the winter sun, surf and, of course, the humpback whales.
